Dennis Stott stood in the darkness of the warehouse, spine upright, shoulders broad and his eyes shut, as he listened to the girl’s gentle sobbing. She had shrieked hysterically for five long minutes, begging for release and wailing uncontrollably as she hammered against the walls. She would not be able to break them. The cell was made of polycarbonate, the same near-indestructible material that police riot shields were made from. It had been easy to get hold of; he’d simply ordered the sheets from a hardware store. They had even cut each sheet to his requested measurements. The cell had withstood many beatings and escape attempts over the years, but it was still standing as strongly as the day he’d built it.

The girl had told Dennis she’d done nothing wrong, but she was a liar. He had seen her with his own eyes. She was a sinner. A vile hypocrite basking in God’s love at Sunday church, then committing sacrilege by drinking in dilapidated bars like Satan’s whore. Liars had to be punished. Hypocrites too. For hypocrites were the worst kind of liar, self-righteously preaching what is good and right, then wallowing in sin like pigs in mud. Dennis could not stand hypocrites, especially those that snivelled in the dark, claiming innocence.

Opening his eyes, he stared through the shadows towards the cell. He couldn’t see her, but he could still hear her quiet weeping and he could sense her fear. It made his skin prickle. She would soon join the others. She would be cleansed and brought back to righteousness. Such was the will of God.

Dennis turned his back to face the wide, open space of the warehouse. He could feel the others in the darkness. All of his beauties, cleansed and transformed.

“Exquisite,” he whispered.

She would join them soon, but first there was an urgent problem needing his attention. Because instead of taking one, he had taken two. Leanne was in the tank. The other was in the basement of his home. She had not been part of his plan, but all the noise she’d made in the street had drawn unwanted attention, and he’d been forced to take her. Now that unwanted attention was mutating dangerously.

The girls’ faces were all over the television news bulletins and the front pages of the newspapers. The police knew about his white van, but the number plate would not lead them to him. As for the girls’ mobile phones, he had tossed them from the window before escaping, so they couldn’t find him that way either. Dennis was thoughtful and intelligent. He had spent years designing and executing his plan. It was fool proof.

And yet his elation was quickly deflating. All these years, he had moved around like a ghost, undetected and unrealised. Now the unwanted media attention was threatening his anonymity and shrinking his window of opportunity.

He would not be stopped now. Not when he was so close to completion.

What should he do with the girl in the basement? She had no purpose and nothing to offer.
